WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN A PORTABLE CAMPING TOILET
Because we actually use these camping toilets we want them to work and to be easy to use. There is a checklist that we go through to make sure that we are checking and reviewing all the things we watch out for and expect (or don’t expect) in the camping toilets.

DESIGN
Simply, we are looking for toilets that are comfortable to sit on. Many of the portable camping toilets look reasonably similar. This is for a reason. Comfort. Comfort will overrule a fancy design any day of the week. No one wants to sit on an uncomfortable toilet. Chad is tall so we use him as a tester to see how comfortable it is.
WEIGHT
This is very important when you consider that they will hold quite a lot of water and waste, sometimes both at once. So, when you have for example a 5.3 gallon waste tank, plus a 2.3 gallon water tank, plus the weight of the unit, things can get a little heavy.
The great thing is though that all of the camping toilets we recommend come apart, meaning that you don’t need to carry the entire unit together. Whilst I am not a weakling, the weight test comes back to me to ensure that it can be carried easily when full.
FLUSHING SYSTEM
We personally love any portable camping toilet with a piston flushing system. Piston flushing means the flush is stronger and more thorough meaning it cleans the toilet better and reduces the need for extra cleaning.
EASE OF USE
This one is simple. Can we use put it together and back together easily? Can we use it easily? Is it easy to clean? Is it easy to store? Can we carry it, perhaps a reasonable distance and does it empty easily without covering us in waste?
FEATURES
We all love a good feature, so we will always check out each portable toilet for special features, like the Alpcour unit which has a unique water sprayer to assist with cleaning.
ROTATING WASTE SPOUT
Whilst this is also considered a key feature, for us, we prefer toilets that have one a rotating waste spout. They just make emptying the waste tank hassle-free.
FUNCTIONALITY
Closely related to the features, we test the portable toilets to make sure they actually work as they are meant to. Are they easy to pull apart? Are they easy to carry? Does the flushing system work? Is it easy to clean, carry and store.?
